Positioning Statement

A positioning statement describes your professional identity, strengths, industries you’ve served and how you can contribute to an employer.

The statement should be memorized so it comes naturally when people ask ”Tell me about yourself” or “What are you looking for.”

Use this statement at networking events, with neighbors, friends, former colleagues, informational interviews, …

The positioning statement will help you when talking with your network. Keep the discussions interactive: for instance you might want to wait to be asked “How long did you work for Company X?” before listing the companies and time you spent in each organization.

Your positioning statement should include:
  1. Your professional identity and level (e.g. ”Director-level Human Resource Professional)
  2. Number of years of experience (e.g. 15 years)
  3. Industries & functions you have expertise and target companies (e.g. Pharmaceuticals)
  4. Specific strengths you offer (e.g. leadership, team-building)
  5. Accomplishments of which you are most proud
  6. What you seek in a new position
